A Brief History of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Back in the latter part of 1993, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class was born. It came off the assembly line as the 1994 model and replaced Mercedes-Benz's previous vehicle in the compact space, the 190E. The initial entry had rear-wheel drive and a four-cylinder engine that put out 147 horsepower. There was also a more powerful six-cylinder engine in some trims that made 194 horsepower. By 1997, a larger engine was available, taking the horsepower up to 276. The improvements continued in 1999 when the C 43 trim got the model's first V-8 engine. It generated an impressive 302 horsepower from its 4.3-liter engine.

The second generation began in 2001 with two V-6 engines to choose from. The following year, the first turbocharged engine came to the market in the C-Class. Afterward exciting news arrived in 2003 with the debut of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class's first all-wheel-drive models. It was available in the C-Class sedans and wagons. Generation two also saw some interior overhauls, including a revised instrument cluster and dashboard. Engine enhancements continued during the latter years of this generation. The C 55 AMG trim came into the lineup and had an eye-opening 5.4-liter V-8 engine with 362 horsepower.

By 2008, it was time for the third generation to begin with the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The Sport and Luxury trims came out this year. The C 300 trim had significant engine changes, as it now had a 3.0-liter V-6 that generated 228 horsepower. A two-door coupe was introduced in 2012 as part of the C-Class lineup. In 2014, the last of the third generation C-Class got its most powerful engine yet. This was a 507-horsepower engine that came with the 507 Edition.

The fourth generation kicked off in 2015 with more engine options, including four-cylinder, V-6, and V-8 options. The V-8 engine was a 4.0-liter with either 469 horsepower or 503 horsepower. In 2017, the coupe and convertible returned as two-door models. In 2019, the 350e hybrid fell off the lineup, though this year did see some style improvements to some trims.

The current fifth-generation has some exciting comforts, including heated front seats, power adjustments in the seats, and leather upholstery in most trims. A hallmark of the fifth-generation C-Class models is the technology you'll find in the vehicles. You'll enjoy wireless charging, streaming media, and a premium sound system in a pre-owned Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
